Ghost

The Ghost Fiam Armchair by Cini Boeri is such an innovative product as to revolutionize the concept of seating, both from a material and a visual point of view: it is the first armchair in the world entirely made of glass. From the very light and incorporeal, almost surreal appearance, the impression of those who sit there is to float in the void. The lines bends in space without edges, in fact Ghost is achieved through the cutting and bending of a single sheet of glass with a thickness of 12 millimeters, which turns into armrests, seat, back. The cut is made with a high pressure water jet that allows a perfect finishing of edges and profiles. A great example of design and production courage, it was designed by the Milanese architect Cini Boeri based on an idea of her assistant Tomu Katayanagi, who convinced her to undertake this seemingly crazy project by making a paper model and letting her glimpse the fascinating shapes that armchair would have. It took two years of incessant experimentation to create the technology suitable for its production and in 1987 it was presented to the public at the Salone del Mobile, immediately achieving great success and being awarded as the most innovative product of that year’s Fair. Today it is part of the collection of many museums, including the MoMA in New York and the Milan Triennale. The Ghost armchair by Fiam is part of the products displayed in our showroom in Viale Certosa 21 in Milan.
