Gufram
The Italian radical design brand that challenges and influences the global design landscape
Gufram, an iconic Italian brand in the field of Interior Design, was founded in Turin in 1966 as a workshop with the ambition to revolutionize the concept of modern furniture. Thanks to his ability to blend art and design, Gufram has created unique works that have become true design legends, such as the Bocca sofa, the Pratone chaise longue and the Cactus room tree, known for their originality and innovation.
The origins and evolution of Gufram
Founded in 1966 as a creative project within the company of the Gugliermetto Brothers, already active in the production of chairs since 1952, Gufram was immediately distinguished by its innovative vision in the design of modern furniture. Influenced by the artistic scene of Turin in the 60s and the radical architecture of the period, the Gugliermetto Brothers, with the help of emerging architects and artists, began to develop new projects that experimented with innovative forms and materials. The introduction of polyurethane, initially used as an insulating material in the transport industry, revolutionized the sector, Allowing the production of seats in a new aesthetic that recalled the Pop Art.
Innovation in design and the role of Giuseppe Raimondi
In 1966, under the artistic direction of Giuseppe Raimondi, Gufram began producing iconic pieces that combined industrial design and art. Raimondi, in addition to signing numerous products for the company, also involved other artists and architects in the creation of innovative prototypes. Another turning point came in 1968 with the launch of “Multipli”, art objects reproduced in limited edition. These pieces were presented at the XIV Triennale in Milan, obtaining a great success that pushed the company to continue on this path. The bold approach and quality of products led Gufram to be recognized as a leader in contemporary design.
International recognition and brand relaunch
Gufram gained an important international visibility when its Multiples were exhibited in 1972 in the exhibition “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where they were also acquired for the permanent collection of the museum. Subsequently, the company’s products were acquired by prestigious museums around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. After more than 30 years of success and changes in management, in 2009 the brand passed under the control of Poltrona Frau Group and later to the company Cassina. In 2011, the brand was relaunched by new entrepreneurs and returned to be active in Piedmont, precisely in Barolo, with the intention of resuming its prominent place in the Italian design scene.
